BOULDER, CO – The Lydiard Foundation Kickoff started off on Memorial Day weekend, on the same stage where Arthur himself wrapped up his presentation almost eighteen months ago. The Kickoff presentation was the brainchild of Lorraine Moller and Nobby Hashizume, co-directors of the Lydiard Foundation.
The Team; (from left to right) Greg McMillan, Dave Martin, Jonas Holdeman, Lorraine Moller, Rod Dixon, Nobby Hashizume and Peter Snell Co-founder of Lydiard Foundation

The event featured a star-studded panel which included one of the original “Arthur’s Boys,” Peter Snell (now Dr. Peter Snell). The two main presentations of the night were by Dr. Peter Snell and Dr. David Martin.

Dr. Martin talked about “The Do-Do Rule and Other Laws of Training.” With exceptional experience in Exercise Physiology in his presentation, personal stories and quick comedic one-line answers, his comments become known to all that night as Martinisms and left the crowd laughing. One example: someone asked about mental /physical barriers and how to overcome them. Dr. Martin’s reply, “the body does have a head.”
Dr. Snell’s presentation was “Why Does Slow Training Improve Speed?” To fully cover this here would take tremendous space. Suffice to say, intensity and duration are two of the key ingredients. Watching race footage, seeing Peter’s progression with training and race results in a “scientific” and methodical approach as well as his personal stories is inspiring. You realize your watching and listening to a living legend.

The discussion panel was as equally impressive. With Greg McMillan moderating, the panel included Rod Dixon and Alan Culpepper, as well as Lorraine, Nobby, Peter and David. The panel covered topics ranging from heart rate monitors (HRM’s)/gadgets, mental barriers, beginner runners and many other topics. With personal insight and experience in all aspects of running and with life, it was a wonderful discussion to listen to.
While listening to everything that was talked about and discussed, you realized one underlying thought. The training principles that Arthur Lydiard has spent decades traveling the globe sharing with runners is just as prevalent today as it ever was.
